Barnstable’s Little Gem: Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary

IMG_2827Step inside the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary and it’s hard not to feel a sense of calm amid the quiet. Bounded by Barnstable Harbor and the dunes of Sandy Neck Barrier Beach, the setting is a stunning, peaceful place to spend a few hours on a summer day. It’s just a mile from the Inn, and a favorite place for our guests who like to jog or walk.

Long Pasture is a wonderful mix of sandy beaches, butterfly-filled meadows and winding woodland trails that encompass 101 acres along the shore, with 2.5 miles of trails—just enough to let you wander leisurely. Follow the Marsh Boardwalk Trail to access the Barnstable Great Marsh, Cape Cod’s largest salt marsh. From there you can continue to the Night Heron Pond, inhabited by the namesake herons, snowy egrets and kingfishers. Other trails lead through open fields and past vernal pools. Keep a look out for a wide range of species, including the American woodcock and eastern box turtle.

The Sanctuary also has a Nature Center with live animal exhibits, showcasing its rare species conservation projects.
