Of all the many activities in the area, one we highly encourage our guests to do is a tour with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises.
In business for more than 30 years, Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises (HWWC) is a locally-run operation that takes tours to Stellwagon Bank National Marine Sanctuary, a place that is consistently ranked as one of the best in the world to see whales. And you’ll be happy to know, they take you in comfort.
Their boat, appropriately named Whale Watcher, provides outside viewing decks, interior climate-controlled cabins and a full-service galley offering food and drinks.
In addition to the professionalism and quality of the tour, an added bonus for our Inn guests is that you can catch a tour right here at Barnstable Harbor. From there, you head into beautiful Stellwagon Bank, home to incredible numbers of large marine mammals who come here every year, hungry for food. The greatest of these: the magnificent baleen whales, including humpback, minke and finback.
Tour visitors often catch some acrobatics, like humpbacks jumping straight out of the water—a thrilling spectacle.
In addition to whales, you might see dolphins, porpoises or seals, plus other large species, such as basking sharks, ocean sunfish and Bluefin tuna. And, this is also a great area for spotting elusive shorebirds: shearwaters, kittiwakes, gannets and more. All in all, a 3 ½ to 4-hour tour offers a wealth of viewing, and seems over way too fast!
