One of the most delightful side trips guests can take while visiting here in Barnstable is to Nantucket Island. The tiny island is just 30 miles off the Cape Cod coast, but feels worlds away.
Nantucket is a picturesque setting with rolling moors, cranberry bogs, beautiful beaches and charming 19th Century buildings. It has a rich history and is home to museums, as well as wonderful shops and restaurants.
To get there, guests can either take a ferry from Hyannis or Harwich Port (we’ll be happy to help you arrange one). A nice option for a day-trip is the faster catamaran ferry which takes only an hour from Hyannis to downtown Nantucket. From there guests can rent bikes, walk to sites, or use the islands shuttle bus service.
Nantucket was once known as the Whaling Capital of the World, so a trip to the Whaling Museum is a perfect place to start your day. Purchase an All Access Pass and you’ll be able to visit other historic sites nearby, including the Oldest House, a whaling merchant’s mansion and the operational Old Mill.
Then wander down to the town’s Main Street, which is filled with eclectic shops and art galleries. Here is where you’ll find stores selling the island’s infamous Nantucket basket, so popular it has it’s own museum here. You’ll also find a range of restaurants, from lobster shacks to finer dining.
If you have time and the energy, there are 12 great biking and walking trails you can explore, a great way to see more of the beautiful land and conservation area of the island.
Having visited Nantucket many times, we’re always glad to help you plot our your day, and offer suggestions for dining and shopping. It’s just one of the many advantages of staying at Ashley Manor. Come visit us!
